Klischees versperren den Blick auf Venedig. Etwas Wahres an Venedig zu entdecken ist kaum möglich. Auffällig bleibt die unendliche Pflege und Mühe der Venezianer ein Bild Venedigs aufrechtzuerhalten, das elegant und schön ist und sich nicht zu einem Touristenmoloch umrüsten lässt. Ein üblicher Zugang zu Venedig scheint versperrt.

Venedigs Bedeutung könnte vielleicht darin liegen, dass es erscheint wie eine eigene Idee, die es in sich trägt. Dass Venedig zudem eine Allegorie ist, erschwert die Annäherung, denn auf Venedig trifft Schlegels Aussage, „alle Schönheit ist Allegorie", noch zu. Durch die Schönheit bezog sich die Allegorie in der Romantik auf das Unaussprechliche, als sich die ästhetische Autonomie noch in der Einheit von Bild und Sinn rechtfertigte, die sie in der Allegorie zu deuten versuchte.

Die abgedruckten Beiträge wurden anläßlich der Ausstellung Schlittschuhlaufen auf Canal Grande bei den Leonhardi Kulturprojekten in Karben geschrieben. So unterschiedlich wie die gezeigten künstlerischen Arbeiten, so unterschiedlich sind auch die parallel entstandenen Texte: Ein Essay der Philosophin Paola Cantù, Gedichte des Philosophen Italo Testa sowie ein Gespräch des Historikers Uwe Israel mit der Soziologin Felicia Herrschaft.

Im Rahmen der Leonhardi Kulturprojekte wird hiermit eine neue Reihe eröffnet, bei der innereuropäische Themen verhandelt werden. Bei der bisherigen Reihe wurden junge unbekannte Kunstszenen aus Nachkriegsgesellschaften vorgestellt, so bisher aus Kabul, Teheran, Prishtina und Belgrad. Der Kontrast zu Venedig mit seiner unvergleichlichen Kunstgeschichte sowie seiner scheinbaren Unversehrtheit könnte kaum größer sein.

Preface

Maybe the Significance of Venice lies in the fact that it appears as its own idea, that it carries inside. That Venice is an allegory as well, makes the approach difficult, because for Venice Schlegels statement, that "all Beauty is allegory", proves right. In the Romanticism the allegory is related to the unspeakable through the beauty, and the aesthetical independence is justified through the unity of image and sense, as which the allegory was tried to be interpreted.

The articles in this volume were written on the occasion of the exhibition Schlittschuhlaufen auf Canal Grande associated with the Leonhardi Kulturprojekte in Karben. The written texts are as diverse as the artwork exhibited: an essay by the philosopher Paola Cantù, poems by the philosopher Italo Testa, and a dialogue between the historian Uwe Israel and the sociologist Felicia Herrschaft.

Within the Leonhardi Kulturprojekte a new platform which focuses its attention on inner-European topics is hereby established. Previous projects were concerned with presenting hitherto unknown art scenes from post-war societies; so far Kabul, Tehran, Pristina and Belgrade. The contrast to Venice with her unmatched history of art and her seeming intactness could not be greater.

I testi inseriti in questo volume sono stati scritti in occasione della mostra Schlittschuhlaufen auf Canal Grande collegata con il Leonhardi Kulturprojekte di Karben. I contributi sono tanto diversi quanto i lavori artistici esibiti: un saggio della filosofa Paola Cantù, poesie del filosofo Italo Testa e un dialogo tra lo storico Uwe Israel e la sociologa Felicia Herrschaft.

Nell’ambito del Leonhardi Kulturprojekte è stata istituita una nuova piattaforma che focalizza argomenti interni all’Europa. In precedenza i progetti riguardavano la presentazione di scene artistiche sconosciute appartenenti a società del dopoguerra: finora Kabul, Teheran, Pristina e Belgrado. Il contrasto con Venezia, con la sua ineguagliata storia dell’arte e la sua apparente integrità, non poteva essere più forte.

Als die Taliban im März 2001 die Buddha-Statue in Bamiyan sprengten, wurde die enorme Dimension ihrer kulturellen Zerstörungspolitik deutlich. Das Projekt „Discovering Democracy – Young Kabul Art 2007“ unterstützte die wieder im Aufbau befindliche junge afghanischen Kultur- und Kunstszene. Der Fokus der teilnehmenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler war auf das Thema Demokratie gerichtet. Denn Demokratie ist nicht nur politische Kunst, sie kann auch künstlerisch dargestellt werden. Nach der Auseinandersetzung mit elementaren Inhalten der Demokratie und Gesprächen mit Parlamentariern sowie dem Sondergesandten des Generalsekretärs der Vereinten Nationen, erstellten die afghanischen Künstlerinnen und Künstler ihre Arbeiten in Beratung mit Frau Felicia Herrschaft und Herrn Phillip von Leonhardi. Die Ergebnisse dieses Projekts wurden in diesem Katalog zusammengestellt. Sämtliche Arbeiten stellen die noch junge und fragile Demokratie Afghanistan dar.

PREFACE

When the Taliban destroyed the Buddha statue in Bamyan in March 2001, the enormous dimension of their strategy of cultural destruction became visible. The project “Discovering Democracy – Kabul Art 2007” supported not only the reconstruction process of the first working circles of young Afghan artists also the thoughtfulness of the participants was focused on democracy because democracy cannot only be described as the state of the art, also it can be stated artistically. After the mediation of the elementary contents of democracy and several discussions with Afghan Parliamentarians and the Special Representative of the General Secretary of the United Nations, the Afghan artists started with their works guided by Ms. Felicia Herrschaft and Mr. Phillip von Leonhardi. The final results of the project have been compiled for you in this catalogue. All objects of arts deal with the young and fragile status of the Afghan democracy.

2005 konnten wir erste Eindrücke der Kunst- und Kulturszene in Afghanistan sammeln und 2007 in dem Workshop „Discovering Democracy“ Young Kabul 2007 vertiefen. Neuartige Aushandlungsformen von Kultur durch Kulturakteure, die sich herausbildenden Diskursarenen der Künstler und Künstlerinnen, lassen Demokratisierungsprozesse in der afghanischen Gesellschaft nicht nur vermuten, aber diese sind belastet, aufgrund von vielen Faktoren.

In 2005 we had the first impact on the art - and culturescene in Afghanistan htrough a research trip. In 2007 provided the author and her colleague with opportunities to examine the public forms of expression that were coming into existence in Afghanistan and making political speech possible. New forms of negotiation of culture employed by cultural actors and the discursive arenas that artists were shaping for themselves provided strong evidence that processes of democratization were taking place in Afghan society, but this process is burdened by many factors.
